Measurement of street use of languages for 2006: Preictions and results
In the 62nd edition of the BAT journal, I presented some hypotheses on the Measurement of Street Use for 2006 at the request of my friend, Lionel Joly. So I shall be comparing these hypotheses with the results obtained in the 2006 Measurement and with what has been written with respect to previous ones.
The 2006 Measurement has left us with the usual sweet and sour taste. As far as the most positive aspects are concerned, we will be citing the overall improvement in use, the increase in the pace of growth, the improvement in use in Gipuzkoa and Araba (Alava) and the improvement in use among children. But alongside these positive aspects lurk others that give great cause for concern. The most salient ones are the inexorable decline in the Northern Basque Country (under French Administration), the total stagnation in Navarre and, as the trend towards improvement has changed, the absence of progress in Bizkaia and among young people.
